Mute Swans and Black Swans

Did you know that mother swans sometimes carry their cygnets on their backs?

At Cigoland, you'll have plenty of time to discover many aspects of this large white bird that everyone knows so well—yet which still has some surprises in store for you.

In May and June, the little cygnets are born—what a thrilling sight!

Did you know?

With its long neck, the Mute Swan can reach for plants just below the water’s surface without having to dive completely. Its bill also has small lamellae that allow it to filter through the mud to catch certain small invertebrates.

And despite its majestic appearance, it’s best to keep your distance! During the nesting season, a swan will vigorously defend its nest and its young. With a wingspan of up to about 2.5 meters, it is one of the most impressive waterbirds to observe.
