The White Storks, Stars of Cigoland
The white stork, the iconic animal of Alsace, is the special guest of Cigoland Park. More than 120 storks have made their home there today, including many that roam freely and that you can observe during your visit.
With its white plumage, black flight feathers, long legs, and red beak, this great traveler is instantly recognizable. Yet it nearly disappeared from the skies over Alsace. Still quite common in 1947, with 177 breeding pairs, its population gradually declined until it reached a critical low of just 9 pairs in 1974.
Founded that same year, Cigoland quickly recognized the need to protect this iconic bird. Aviaries designed for breeding and numerous nesting structures were installed to encourage the bird’s return and provide it with new habitats.
Today, the white stork has once again established a large population in Alsace, but Cigoland remains a favorite habitat for the species. Look up! Numerous nests dot the park, and depending on the season, you may see the adults building their nests or caring for their chicks.

Did you know that storks use warm air currents to gain altitude and glide during their migrations? Or that their diet is very varied—insects, worms, amphibians, and small rodents are all part of their menu?
