Dwarf Donkeys
Miniature donkeys are believed to have originated in Europe and to have first appeared between 2000 and 1500 B.C. in Sardinia (Italy). These early miniature donkeys are thought to be descendants of wild donkeys from Africa. Gradually, they were exported throughout the Mediterranean region, and then to the United States beginning in 1929. Robert Green, an American who fell in love with this breed, imported seven of these donkeys to New Jersey. The miniature donkeys found around the world today are primarily descended from American bloodlines. By nature, they do not like to be alone and are quite sociable, even with other animal species. If you call out to them as you approach, one of them will surely come toward you or bray to greet you.

Donkeys are far from being simply “stubborn”! Like other equids, they carefully observe their surroundings and use their behavior to show what catches their attention or worries them. The position of their head, their posture, and the movements of their ears are all clues to watch for.
His big ears are, in fact, true tools of communication. Their position can help convey his mood and level of attention. At Cigoland, take a look at them: are they pointed forward, to the sides, or backward? Try to guess what has caught his attention!
